King Balred Penny

An incomplete penny of King Baldred of Kent (c. AD 823 - AD 825).

Nothing is known of Baldred except that he ruled Kent as a usurper shortly before 825, when Ecberht of Wessex sent his son Ethelwulf into that country with a large army, which drove Baldred beyond the Thames. This brought to an end the coinage of Kent as an independant kingdom
